Professor
I am Jacob Lin, an Associate Professor at National Taiwan University in the Department of Civil Engineering. Earlier, I received my PhD in CEE and MS in CS from UIUC advised by Mani Golparvar-Fard. We started an AI construction company Reconstruct with Derek Hoiem and Joe Degol.
My research focuses on creating new computer vision algorithms that use visual data and BIM for construction project controls; leveraging synergies between lean construction, BIM and Reality modeling for construction production management; and building predictive schedule analytics for construction risk management.

Courses
CIE3030 Spring – Construction Management
The course is designed to allow students to develop an understanding of the construction “Project lifecycle” process from the initial conception phase of a project through the completion of construction. Emphasis is placed upon the construction and management aspects of the lifecycle.

CIE7052 Fall – Project Management for Construction
This course introduces the Project Management Knowledge, specialized for construction industry. The fundamentals of project management and the importance of each project phase will be well covered. In addition, the recent technological advances that facilitate construction project management, such as Building Information Modeling and Lean Construction, will be explored throughout the course.

CIE5141 Spring – Computer Vision in Construction
This course introduces 2D and 3D visual sensing (Computer Vision) and how it can solve civil engineering problems. This is an application-driven and project-based course that also covers basic understanding of the theoretical concepts of computer vision and image processing (e.g. feature detection and matching, 3D scene reconstruction, object detection and tracking, and SLAM).

CIE5139 Spring – High Tech Facility Design
The purpose of this course is to provide basic design knowledge needed for fabrication facilities that support high-tech manufacturing and R&D. Students will gain skills needed to meet ever-changing challenge of delivering an ultra-pure clean room and ultra-pure process utilities. Moreover, this course will strengthen students’ understanding and background in constructing high-tech manufacturing fab/plant and research lab.

CIE1005 Fall – Engineering Graphics
Students will learn and apply computer-aided drawing software in depth to develop their basic and advanced engineering drawing, viewing and presentation skills. They will also use actual engineering cases to develop their ability to think about and compose space, so as to effectively express and communicate engineering design content.
